eSe Amor: Great Works of Love is a celebration of love, romance and sensuality through bilingual excerpts of Latin American literature, live music performances and spontaneous dance.

From the reciting of Pablo Neruda’s poetry and excerpts of Isabel Allende’s Aphrodite: A Memoir of the Senses, to tastings of gourmet, handcrafted chocolate, fine wines, and tantalizing tapas, guests will be treated to a full sensory experience in the intimate setting of ACT’s Bullitt Cabaret.

Directed by Rose Cano, the presentation will feature bilingual readings of excerpts from works by Pablo Neruda, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Isabel Allende, Alfonsina Storni, Mario Vargas Llosa, and Laura Esquivel, accented with live music performances and dancing demos. The catered event includes complimentary light fare, fine wine, and gourmet chocolate tastings, and items for auction or raffle including tickets to Seattle Symphony, spa visits, massage, fine dining certificates and many more, to keep the romance aflame all year long.

Singles in Seattle on Valentine’s Day don’t have to miss out on all the fun, either, as Sexy Single Seating offers balcony seating reserved exclusively for singles to enjoy the show and mingle with other singles!

Ticket sales ($50) and a silent auction of items inspired by love and passion will help raise funds for eSe Teatro’s 2012 Season which will include a mainstage theatre production at ACT (A Contemporary Theatre), Multicultural Playwrights Festival, Solo Festival and other community theatrical productions.

eSe members Arlene Martinez-Vickers and Lonnie Tristan Renteria are participating in Stone Soup’s holiday presentation, A Child’s Christmas in Wales.

Adapted from the story by Dylan Thomas, Directed by Arlene Martinez-Vickers

One of the most enduring, yet oft-forgotten holiday memoirs, Dylan Thomas’s A Child’s Christmas in Wales comes to life at Stone Soup Theatre, recreating the nostalgic magic of Thomas’ childhood Christmas when everything was brighter, better and more alive. Come experience a slice of Dylan’s memories and find your own in the colorful characters, family dynamics and live Christmas music in Stone Soup’s new version of this holiday classic, performed by both youth conservatory graduates and seasoned professionals, guaranteed to entertain kids and adults alike!

Renteria plays Uncle Glyn.

The production begins with a $9 preview on December 8 at 7:30 pm and runs through December 24th. En tu memoria: Original play performed at Latino Community Fund Summit

eSe memeber Lonnie Tristan Renteria, wrote and directed an original play entitled En tu memoria made possible through a generous grant from the Latino Community Fund. The play, a dramatic comedy, addresses various themes facing local latino communities the likes of education, bilingualism, homophobia, machismo, assimilation and a desire to maintain heritage on our own terms.

Renteria has suggested that the play took on a life of its own. Twenty minutes was not enough to convey the depth of each character, their choices and the stakes that represent ideas that the latino community continues to explore. Inspired by French-Canadian dramaturgical practices, the writing of the play’s revisions became a collective endeavor, making of En tu memoria a product of collective voices and cooperation. Renteria has expressed a desire to flesh out the play to a full length script.

The play cast: Erwin Galan as Emilio; Meg Savlov as Telma; Maristela Diaz as Carmela; Nilki Benitez as Tania; Rubi Romero as Mrs. Ramirez; and Lonnie Tristan Renteria as Alberto Moralez.

Rose Cano receives 4 Culture grant to develop play Don Quixote: Homeless in Seattle

eSe member Rose Cano received a prestigious grant to develop and produce a play that addresses issues around homelessness and services at the local level. Inspired by the perils and travails of Don Quixote, Cano has adapted the story in present time. As part of the development process, Cano has been going to various service organizations to do readings and get feedback about the authenticity of her text. Her readings have enjoyed much success, but even more important, the readings have brought many more local latino and Spanish-speaking actors into the acting pool. Moreover, Cano’s play reminds us of ese’s mission.

So far Cano has introduced scenes at Consejo Counseling services, Casa Latina and Compass Center.

REPRESENT! July 19-24 2011 Multicultural Playwrights Festival

SEATTLE, WA – The Hansberry Project, in a joint venture with eSe Teatro, SIS Productions and Pratidhwani, will host “Represent!: A Multicultural Playwrights’ Festival” July 19-24. The festival will feature staged readings of new 3 full-length plays, an evening dedicated specifically to showcasing the work of six very talented local writers and a panel about the role of ethnically specific theatres in the development of new work.

According to Hansberry Artistic Director, Valerie Curtis-Newton, “We have always been clear that the work of the playwright is central to all that we do. They are theatre’s true generative artists. Their vision, passion and craft call the rest of us to the process. The Hansberry Project is in committed to doing whatever we can do to support them. Last, year, we took a huge step forward – commissioning our first play. This year, we are showing support for playwrights by hosting our first new play festival. eSe Teatro, SIS Productions and Pratidwhani have accepted our invitation to join us in making a space for playwrights of color to be heard. We’re very excited by the energy that is being generated by this new collaboration. Our hope is that REPRESENT! will become an annual event. ”

A local writers’ showcase kicks off the week. The playwrights whose work will be included are: LaChris Jordan, Reginald A. Jackson, Danielle Villegas, Lonnie Tristan Renteria, Kathy Hsieh and Maggie Lee.

The heart of the REPRESENT! is a series of full length readings by some of the most exciting playwrights on the national scene. The selected plays are:
THE FINAL DAYS OF NEGROVILLE by Keith Josef Adkins
directed by Valerie Curtis-Newton
Built largely on the success of its Black middle class inhabitants (doctors, lawyers, school administrators), Negroville is fraught with dysfunction – loneliness, infidelity, and a loss of history. Over the course of a single day, the town’s well-educated African-American mayor, Cornell Gates, is caught in a series of events that challenge the truth about the town’s history and forever change the future for this set of middle class African-Americans. Presented by The Hansberry Project.

THE LAND OF CORN AND POWER by Joann Farias
directed by Arlene Martinez-Vickers

Jeff, second generation Mexican-American, gives up his Law degree for Anthropology and a trip to Guatemala to study the Mayan’s religious believes. This study will initiate a journey of transformation, not only for Jeff, but also for the Mayan shamans he comes in contact with. This insightful text by Joann Farias explores the effect that two colliding cultures can have on each other, in this age of globalization. Presented by eSe Teatro.

When American couple, Katie and Craig, make a last-ditch effort to create a baby of their own, their quest leads them to India to “rent” a surrogate. A hilarious, unsettling look at whether we can truly achieve intimacy in the face of shrinking worlds and expanding boundaries. Presented by SIS Productions and Pratidhwani

The festival will close with a conversation entitled REPRESENTING: Ethnically-Specific Theatre in the 21st Century. Valerie Curtis-Newton, Kathy Hsieh, Danielle Villegas, Arlene Martinez-Vickers and Agastya Kohli will discuss the role of ethnically specific theatre in the development of new work.

A new kind of Greek Tragedy. Where the South Side Locos are Kings and Spanglish rules.

A Chicano take on the Greek tragedy Electra, Luís Alfaro’s Electricidad is a brutally modern adaptation of the classic revenge saga set within gang culture of the “barrio”. One of the foremost Latino playwrights in the U.S. and winner of the MacArthur “Genius Award”, Luís Alfaro’s eye-opening rendition situates the iconic characters in the present-day world of the “Cholo” where the South Side Locos are Kings and Spanglish rules. Electricidad is mourning her father’s body in her front yard, much to the dismay of the vecinos (neighbors) and her mother Clemencia, who was rumored to have had him killed to establish her power in the gang hierarchy. A comical bilingual chorus called “El Chisme” gossips and tries to save their barrio from inevitable cycles of violence.

eSe Teatro‘s presentation of Electricidad is a blend between a staged reading and a fully produced play, presented in Spanglish.
